How to Prepare Your Pet for Travelling in Cargo

How to Prepare Your Pet for Travelling in Cargo

Relocating with your pet can be an anxious process, especially when traveling to or from the UAE, including Dubai and Abu Dhabi. This guide provides essential tips and advice to ensure your pets will be travelling the most optimal condition.

1. Preparing Your Pet for Travel

Acclimating to the Transport Cage:

  • Introduce your pet to the travel cage well in advance of the trip.
  • Take short car rides with your pet in the cage to get them used to the experience.
  • Place an item with a familiar scent, such as a cushion, towel, or worn t-shirt, inside the cage. This provides comfort through a familiar smell.
  • In some extreme cases, you can help your pet get accustomed to the travel environment by covering the cage to create darkness and playing recordings of aircraft noises. This will help your pet get used to the darkness and the sounds of the plane.
  • Avoid placing toys or leashes inside the cage; these can be secured in a small bag attached to the crate.

Avoid Sedatives:

  • Do not use tranquilisers or sedatives, as they can impair respiratory function, especially at high altitudes.
  • If your pet requires medication to calm down, consult your vet for alternatives.
  • For dogs, consider using a DAP (Dog Appeasing Pheromone) collar.
  • For cats, consider using a Feliway spray on a towel inside the cage.

2. Feeding and Hydration

The Day/Night Before Departure:

  • Feed your pet half of their usual meal.

The Day of Departure:

  • Do not feed your pet; provide only water.
  • Healthy adult pets can travel on an empty stomach. Consult your vet for advice on feeding puppies or kittens.

Arrival Day:

  • Upon arrival, offer your small amount of water to drink, followed by a light meal (¼ of their usual portion).
  • Monitor your pet and wait a few hours before providing more food.
  • If your pet exhibits unusual behaviour, contact a local veterinarian immediately.

3. Travel Conditions

Your pet will travel in a ventilated, pressurised, temperature-controlled cargo hold, situated just below the passenger cabin. The travel cage will be securely fastened with straps to ensure stability. The conditions are designed to keep pets as comfortable as possible throughout the flight.

By following these tips, you can ensure that your pet's relocation to or from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, or anywhere in the UAE is as as safe as possible. Proper preparation is key to a successful journey for both you and your beloved companion.
